How do I prevent GIMP 2.8 and MS Word 2016 from compressing the final output and losing image quality at all costs, regardless of the final file size?
Resizing always degrades image resolution. Up or down! It should be obvious that downsizing will always cost resolution, so I shouldn’t have to justify that. But resizing larger always costs image resolution, too. The reason is obvious, if you think about it. Your original has pixels that fairly accurately represent the details of the original photographic subject. T are the best information you’ve got about the original scene. When upsizing the image, new pixels are added in-between the original pixels. The pixels added are a guess. A smart resizing software program/filter will be designed to make good intelligent guesses. But t are still guesses about what was in the original scene. And many of those guesses will just be wrong. Wrong guesses decrease the image resolution. It’s as simple as that. You can’t create accurate information about the original by guessing. Here is a sketch of the same image, one resized up normally, and the other resized up by just making the pixels 10 times as big, to simulate the original so you can see the sharp detail in the original. But yes, it looks blocky. But that’s the point. The original had exactly those pixels. It’s got sharp detail. In the second upsized image, you can easily see that the sharpness of the original has been lost. The details are fuzzy guesses. Original. Upsized version of original. Notice how blurry the upsized version is, and how resolution has been lost. None of the edges are hard, like the original. All detail is blurry, and the colors are not pure and solid red, green, blue, or black, like the original. Information about the original image has been lost. The guesses were poor. As an intelligent human being, you could match the colors exactly, and smooth out the jagged edges. Smart upsizing software might do that pretty well, but t still would be guesses about original pixels. You would still lose resolution where the guesses weren’t good. Here is a third version, where I applied a more intelligent sharpening filter to the rather blurry upsized version. This would simulate very intelligent upsizing software. It’s less fuzzy, but it’s still fuzzy. No hard edges. It still has colors that don’t match the original image. There are noticeable image “artifacts”, similar to JPEG compression artifacts. The resizing you see on CSI is not real. It’s fantasy. It’s fake. You don’t get additional detail by upsizing an image. You CAN enlarge an image like I did with my “original” image above, and preserve the original detail, like I did in the image above. You CAN increase contrast, and adjust exposure so that you can see critical details better. But you can’t increase image resolution. Actually, you can increase image resolution if you have the lens used to photograph the image, if you’ve got the lab and the money. The CIA uses a laser to analyze the specific lens that will be used in a spy satellite. Knowing the exact defects in a specific lens can help you correct for those exact defects. But that different. That adds information about the lens to the information about the image recorded, and produces a corrected image with more accurate information than the original.

Export PDF: All You Need to Know
Not true at all. If you do what the CIA does, you just lose more resolution and details than you preserve. More information is lost, and you are more likely to get mistakes. All resizing is not equal. When you look at a real example of resizing, you can also tell what it has to do with the image quality you expect there. This is why I say “fake” resizing. The image quality is improved as you get closer to or further from the original. Resize and Zoom are very tightly linked. That’s because you use it often to zoom in and out, when you have a big picture to look at. In order to be able to “zoom” in, you need to resize the picture. Resizing does two things: it creates new pixels to represent the original area and replaces pixels that are too far from the.
